UFC newcomer Caio Magalhaes in as replacement against Fabio Maldonado at UFC 142
Fabio Maldonado will welcome UFC newcomer Caio Magalhaes next month at UFC 142 in Brazil, the organization announced on Monday morning.
Magalhaes steps in for Stanislav Nedkov, who was scratched from the card reportedly due to visa issues. The 5-0 light heavyweight is a member of the Nova Uniao team with UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo, and enters off a split decision win in his last bout earlier this month.
Maldonado had an 11 fight winning streak snapped in his last fight, a decision against Kyle Kingsbury in June. He's now 1-1 in his UFC career.
UFC 142 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro on January 14, headlined by the Featherweight Title bout between Aldo and Chad Mendes.

Spike TV to Air 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays' During TUF 15 on FX
Filed under: MMA Media Watch, UFC, Bellator, News

The move comes as no surprise as Spike aired UFC programming on its network at the same time as the UFC's debut on FOX and has already announced that it will do the same during the UFC's second show on FOX on Jan. 28.
Interestingly enough, though, Bellator Fighting Championships, which is owned by Spike TV's parent company, Viacom, will debut its sixth season on MTV2 on March 2, as well. However, according to David Schwarz, Spike TV's Vice President of Communications, MTV2 has not decided which time slot it will use to air Bellator events. That could very well be based on the time slot FX uses to air TUF 15 next year.
"We have to monetize the library," Schwarz said when asked about Spike's decision to counter UFC programming on FOX. "The UFC prefers that we keep the library and run the library."
Spike has the right to air old UFC programming for one more year before its contract with the promotion expires. The UFC could buy back the library to prohibit this from happening, but UFC president Dana White has already stated publicly that he is not interested in doing so.
Spike announced recently that Bellator will move to its airwaves come 2013.

Quick Quote: UFC 141's Brock Lesnar - "If I execute my gameplan, Alistair Overeem cannot win this fight"
The words continue to fly between heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem ahead of their UFC 141 main event on December 30. Prior to a teleconference with the two next week, the UFC released a couple more quotes from both of them:
Says Overeem - "This fight isn't going to last two rounds. Mr. Lesnar is the best wrestler in the division, but he has a big weakness: he cannot strike. And unfortunately I am the best striker in the world.?
Added Lesnar: "He says he is going to knock me out inside two rounds. That's his dream. The reality is that if I execute my gameplan, Alistair Overeem cannot win this fight."

UFC 141's Alistair Overeem discusses NSAC testing confusion, continued steroid accusations
![]() |
However, the Dutch striker tried to clear up the situation with the NSAC in an interview with ESPN.com, and maintained that he's not a steroid user.
"I didn't know [random testing] could happen," Overeem explained. "Nobody told me. The rules and regulations were unknown to me. The other thing is, how do you get that done in Holland? How do you get that done if you live in China? How do you do that if you're somewhere else?"
Though the NSAC stated during their meeting last week that they hadn't had issues with other fighters the way Overeem's situation played out in Holland, Overeem insists he did what he felt was right when he was given the request.
"The rules and regulations in Holland are different," he began. "Whenever you have a condition here, you go to your doctor. You have to make an appointment. They slipped me through within 24-to-48 hours because it was important. You then get a referral to another facility, where you have to make another appointment."
"First time I went there, I didn't have the specifics of the test. I was only told I needed to do a drug panel test. With those instructions, I went to lab and did a test. It took a few days, and the commission responded, 'These are not the correct results. You need to do it again.' So, I went back to the doctor and he said, 'We don't know how to do that.' I had to go to another agency, which needs a formal request from the organization you're fighting for to run the test. A combination of factors caused the delay."
The confusion in just what type of test he needed to take also came about as the NSAC was in contact with his assistant instead of Overeem himself, and that's one of the reasons the Commission granted him a conditional license. Of course, that also means he has multiple tests he has to pass before and after UFC 141, but Overeem continues to be steadfast in his innocence when it comes to steroid use.
"People have accused me of using steroids since I was 17," he said. "I remember my first fight, my girlfriend was in the audience, and she told me people, jealous guys, were whispering I was taking steroids. That was when I was 17. I was a middleweight back then. All I can say is my side of the story. When I was 20, I was already a natural heavyweight. I weighed 222 pounds."
"Cutting the weight to light heavyweight worked out in the beginning, but I couldn't do a strength and conditioning program and I was dieting all the time. When I made the decision to move to heavyweight, I went on a food program, strength and conditioning program, and I gradually gained weight. Eleven years ago, I was 222 pounds. Now I'm 265. That's 40 pounds added in 11 years."
Ultimately, Overeem isn't concerned with the critics, and he's not going to attempt to control something he can't.
"I firmly believe everyone is entitled to his/her opinion," he said. "We have free speech. If people want to talk that way, let them talk that way. I can't control what people say. If they want to insinuate things, that's fine. I'm too occupied with my own career to bother with it."
"I'm going to do whatever the commission asks me to do. It's my job. On a positive note, I'll be the most tested fighter ever. That takes away the critics' argument."
Penick's Analysis: Fighters that look like Overeem does (and there aren't many) are always going to have people that believe they're on something. Even though many of the fighters and athletes that have been caught using performance enhancers don't look anything like him. Still, it would be impossible to quiet his most ardent critics no matter how many tests he passes. He can't concentrate on the doubters, and he sounds like he's not going to in the least.

Simpson vs. Markes, Brookins vs. Yahya Added to UFC on FUEL Event

Aaron Simpson will put his three-fight win streak on the line when he faces Brazilian Ronny Markes in a 185-pound fight, while Ultimate Fighter season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins will face submission wizard Rani Yahya.
Simpson (11-2) has tried to work his way into middleweight contention with consecutive victories over Eric Schafer, Mario Miranda and Brad Tavares, wins that came on the heels of a two-fight losing streak.
To continue that run, he'll have to beat Markes, who made his octagon debut on short notice and out-worked Karlos Vemola to a decision win in an August event. That match was contested at light-heavyweight, and in this one, Markes (12-1) will attempt to stake out some ground in the UFC's 185-pound division.
The featherweight bout between Brookins and Yahya features a pair of fighters who prefer to look for victory on the ground. Brookins (12-4) has eight of his wins by tapout, while Yahya (16-7) has 14 submission wins. Both men are coming off losses.
UFC on FUEL 1 will take place on February 15, 2012, and though the venue isn't official, it is likely to emanate from CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. It features a main event of Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger.

Early pay-per-view estimates for UFC 140 "Jones vs. Machida" at 480,000 buys
After a series of events drawing less than 300,000 pay-per-view buys, Jon Jones' second title defense of 2011 at UFC 140 brought an uptick in business for the UFC. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, early estimates for the event have it at around 480,000 buys.
That number puts it slightly behind Jones' bout with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in September and right on point with his fight with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in March.
However, considering the string of down business for the UFC on pay-per-view recently, as well as Brock Lesnar's return coming later in the month, this card was not expected to do quite this well, so this is a very good early number.

Randy Couture believes Michael Bisping deserves consideration for UFC Title shot
ESPN UK caught up with Randy Couture recently and asked him whether he felt Michael Bisping deserved a title shot in the middleweight division after his most recent win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Here was Couture's response:
"I think he probably does. He's right up there in the top four or five guys in that weight class. You can split hairs on deciding who the No. 1 contender is. He's coming off a great outing against Jason Miller, weathered a storm and had the conditioning and great technique to finish the fight well. He's one of the top guys so why not?"
Bisping may finally get his chance in late 2012 if he can get past Demian Maia, as the winner of their fight at UFC on Fox 2 is expected to get the shot after the winner of Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz on that same card.

Jon Jones' trainer Greg Jackson tries to clear up "get some fans" comment after UFC 140 win
![]() |
"I shouldn't have spoken in that way, but that wasn't my intention. It sounded bad, but moronic [expletive] comes out of my mouth sometimes. What I was saying was, 'Go check on Lyoto,' what I meant was to remember that you're a public figure. There's always attention on you and what you're doing all the time, and there's cage etiquette. There's things you're supposed to do, and going and checking on somebody is what you're supposed to do.
And now because I'm in military mode and in shorthand mode, I say, 'Jon, go check on Lyoto and go get some fans,' and what I should have said was, 'You're a public figure. There's a way to conduct yourself.' But instead, I shorthanded it. That's the point I want to drive home. Jon is a really good guy. Everybody is just attacking his character because that's what you have to attack when you can't attack somebody's fighting.
It's not that he was a bad guy. You just literally go crazy. None of these guys outside of the cage could understand that after the fight, you're in the zone, man. It's such an intense camp, especially for Jon, month after month, fight after fight.
Let's take B.J. Penn for an example. He's actually a really nice guy; he walks around licking blood off his gloves all the time. Chuck Liddell is one of the sweetest, nicest guys you'll ever meet, but when he knocks you unconscious, he runs around screaming and pumping his arms. That's not normal behavior. So my job with Jon is to remind him. When the referee said break, he broke, and then he was still there in that zone. I was like, 'Now, it's time to relax and calm down and check on the guy.' I should have said, 'Remember your public figure.' But like I say, 'Go get some Donald Cerrone,' I said, 'Go get some fans."
Penick's Analysis: It makes sense that he'd need to attempt to snap Jones out of fight mode, and it's a certainly reasonable explanation for why he said anything like that, but it also didn't come off well the way he worded it. Really, Jones is so incredible in the cage he shouldn't be doing anything outside of it that isn't him. He's a young, confident, and incredible fighter, and if he's not the fan favorite, who cares? He can be a big star as himself, whatever that may truly be, but anything that comes off as fake or phony is going to lead to some backlash from fans.

UFC eying May show in Brazil, could mark Anderson Silva's return
The UFC is expecting Brazil to be a major boon for them in 2012 and beyond. After a successful return to the country for the first time in the Zuffa-era last August, they're already going back in January for UFC 142. Following the UFC 140 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that their eying another quick turnaround as well.
Said White (via MMAWeekly.com): "How many events are we going to do in Brazil next year? Right now, what I know, we've got two coming up. We're gonna do Rio [in January] and probably another one in May."
The May event is expected to be a stadium card, and would be about a month earlier than what had been rumored, meaning Anderson Silva's return could be coming earlier than expected. He'll take on the winner of January's Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz bout from UFC on Fox 2.

UFC Champ Jon Jones talks competitive philosophy in regards to NFL's Ndamukong Suh on ESPN's Sportscenter
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones appeared on ESPN's Sportscenter Monday night to help set up a piece on embattled NFL player Ndamukong Suh of the Detroit Lions. Jones was asked about switching from real life to competitive mode, and he discussed his philosophy for entering his competitive environment:
"I think a lot of athletes do have a switch. Me, I'm pretty calm and relaxed as a person, and I'm also calm and relaxed in the Octagon. I believe that the more relaxed and composed you stay, the more you're able to use all your brain cells, and you can actually focus on your techniques and focus on what you have to do better. Getting amped up and everything, it actually works against my game.
It is a little bit of a dangerous sport, and obviously it's [violent]. But I kind of look at it more like a dance. Fighting in [mixed] martial arts to me is more about achieving self excellence. Being able to control your body, being able to really achieve the most ultimate level of fluidity. Our bodies [are] our canvas, and it's just a beautiful thing for me. So there's no switch, it's more about self excellence and being a warrior. "

UFC, FUEL Still Negotiating Deal for International Editions of TUF

In the past, White said that international editions of TUF would likely air on FUEL as part of their new wide-ranging deal with FOX-owned networks, but on a Tuesday afternoon teleconference, FUEL executive vice president and general manager George Greenberg said that as of right now, the two sides are still in negotiations to bring the new editions of TUF to air in the U.S.
"Right now, any international edition of The Ultimate Fighter is something we are in discussions with the UFC," he said. "We have no firm deal for TUF Australia or TUF Brazil, or any other TUF show right now.
"We'd love to do this," he added. "I don't think it's going to be an obstacle to get through negotiations."
Greenberg said that he believed the channel, which is already planning 2,000 hours of UFC programming in 2012, still has room to add the international editions of TUF.
Asked to describe the negotiations for the TV properties, he said that the relationship has made for easy communications between the two sides thus far, and that they speak four to five times a day.
"For us, negotiations are sort of easy," he said. "Specifically we're in talks, but I can't tell you what stage. Everything we do with the UFC always will turn out with a healthy ending for both parties. If it's good for the sport, it will be good for the UFC, and it will be great for the FOX Sports media group. I can promise you that."
FUEL will kick off its commitment to its new partner with 24 hours of UFC programming on Jan. 1. On Jan. 3, its weekly news show UFC Tonight premieres at 10 pm, hosted by former WEC announcer Todd Harris and featuring our own Ariel Helwani.
Other UFC on FUEL programming notes:
- Live weigh-in shows begin airing on FUEL on Jan. 13, with UFC 142.
- Live event post-fight coverage will feature one-hour shows hosted by Jay Glazer, beginning on Jan. 14 with UFC 142
- FUEL begins televising UFC preliminary fights on Jan. 20, with the undercard of an FX event.
- FUEL will have the right to air the U.S. editions of The Ultimate Fighter 24 hours after original episodes air on FX.
- There will be quarterly "Champion's Roundtable" specials, with past and current titleholders discussing a wide range of MMA topics
FUEL is currently available in about 38 million households, but Greenberg said the channel's goal is to house so much UFC programming that fans will demand and receive it from their cable and satellite providers.
"I can guarantee you we're going to become the most wanted channel in the television landscape," he said.

Dana White: Fighters already in Strikeforce will be staying in Strikeforce
![]() |
"The guys that are in Strikeforce are staying in Strikeforce," White said (quotes transcribed by MMAWeekly.com). "Strikeforce lives."
That means that current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will not be transitioning to the UFC after his fight with Jorge Masvidal next weekend, a point that will no doubt upset many fans, and probably Melendez himself. However, while his expected move over to the top of the UFC's lightweight class isn't happening, White assures that Strikeforce's fighters will be happy they're there.
"Gilbert Melendez and all the guys that are in the Strikeforce show and with Showtime, I will make fights [for them]," White said. "They will be happy to be there. Believe me, I got this thing worked out. It's going to be good for everybody. It's going to be good for the fighters, it's going to be good for Showtime, and it's going to be good for Strikeforce."
Penick's Analysis: I'm withholding judgment on that call until we see what the UFC's plans with Strikeforce are, but it's hard not to be disappointed that Melendez isn't going to be coming into the Octagon when it was looking like a mere formality after his fight with Masvidal. There aren't a ton of other fighters on Strikeforce's roster that would have been clamored for to be in the Octagon, but there are a handful fans will wish were there. Still, if the UFC is going to perhaps transition some fighters over to Strikeforce to boost up the roster, or if they've got some other ideas we haven't thought of yet, things could definitely work for all sides. At the least, I'm intrigued to see what they're going to do.

UFC 140's Tito Ortiz reveals he may be ready to retire in 2012
"Maybe it's time... When I leave on my own terms... when I don't have fun coming in the gym anymore, sparring and pushing myself and running every day, maybe it is time. I'm not overstaying my welcome. My goal in my whole career was to do 15 years in MMA. May 30 will be my 15th year of fighting in the UFC and in MMA, in general. This will be fight number 26 for me, I think... I'll have 27 and walk away. I think I've done good. I don't know. But you never know. You never know if Dana and Lorenzo come to me with some numbers that make sense to me."

A big year for UFC closes with Snoop Dogg at Christmas party
The UFC took its game to another level in 2011, so why not go over the top with a year end celebration?
The long sought after network exposure arrived with the Fox deal, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that the fellas at Zuffa went big for company Christmas pasty that included a Snoop Dogg performance at Red Rock Casino Resort. Here's some raw video from the performance (NSFW).
A jubilant Dana White, who is pictured with the Fertitta Brothers and Snoop, gave a big thanks to his staff.
It must've been a helluva party. White, who is seemingly on Twitter 20 hours a day, checked back in Monday afternoon.
